Indian corn/Maiz pujagua

Check out this beautiful Indian corn, popularly used in a local Nicaraguan drink called 'pozol' - a drink made with corn, milk, sugar and water.  It's also used in chingue and a corn based drink for babies called 'cernido de niño'.  Yummy!!!

Mirá este maiz pujagua tan bonito, comunmente ocupado en una bebida tradicional Nica llamada 'pozol' - hecha con maíz, leche, azúcar y agua. También se ocupa en chingue y en una bebida de niños llamada 'cernido de niño'.  Umm umm!

Pumice stone/Piedra poma

 























In the Chilamate, Masaya area, there are a lot of pumice stone deposits. As you might know, pumice is formed from 'frothy volcanic lava' that has been super compressed. It has a lot of uses: a cement additive, pencil erasers, toothpaste, cosmetic exfolients, stone-washing your jeans (I found one in a new pair of Levi's once) and soap. It is mined by local workers, who are paid C$13 a bag for their work. A skilled pumice stone worker can bag about 8 sacks a day, for a whopping C$104 ($5).

En la zone de El Chilamate, Masaya, hay muchos depósitos de piedra poma. Quizá sepa que esta piedra se forma de magma volcánica (con bastantes burbujas) que ha sido sometida a presión intensa. Se ocupa en muchas cosas: agregado al cemento, borradores, pasta de dientes, exfoliantes de piel, el look 'gastado' de azulones (yo encontré una en un nuevo par de Levis una vez) y jabón. Trabajadores locales sacan la piedra de la tierra por C$13 por saco. Un trabajador hábil en esta labor quizá pueda llenar 8 sacos al día, un pago de C$104 ($5).

House on the beach/casa en la playa

A lot of people dream about having a house on the beach. This house on the beach in Granada, however, tells a different story. Note the sign on the house. Translated, it states:

"Hi friends. We hope you can help us this Christmas with whatever you can and may God bless your home and you yourself wherever you may go and we with much love wish you a merry Christmas with your family. Thanks!"

Mucha gente sueña con tener una casa en la playa. Esta casa por las costas de Granada, sin embargo, cuenta una historia diferente. Notá el rótulo colgado a la casa.

Washing machine/lavadora

Another example of the signage in Nicaragua. Originally, the sign advised that there was a drainage crossing ahead. Now it advises that there is a washing machine ahead.

Otro ejemplo de la rotulación en Nicaragua. En el comienzo, este rótulo avisaba de un vado. Ahora avisa que hay una lavadora más adelante. Traete tu ropa!!

Birdhouse/palomera

Here is a homemade birdhouse that, at one time and unbeknown to it's owners, housed two male birds. However, one of them finally got wise and went out and brought a female one back. He then ousted the other male, who can be seen in the upper branches of this tree. The happy couple is in expectation of eggs and new hatchings, at some point in the future.  So are the cats....

Aquí está una palomera que, hace un tiempo y sin darse cuenta los dueños, fue un hogar para dos palomas machos. Sin embargo, uno de ellos se volvió sabio y se fue a traerse una hembra. En seguida, echó para fuera el otro macho, quien ahora habita las ramas externas de este palo. La pareja feliz espera huevos y nuevas palomas, en algún momento futuro.  Asímismo los gatos....

Bad dog/perro malcriado

Why is this dog sticking his tongue out at me? I don't know. I didn't do anything to him. You might not believe it but it seems to be a custom among Nica dogs.

¿Porqué me saca la lengua este perro? No sé. No le hice nada. Aunque no me creás, parece ser una costumbre entre perros nicas.

Termites/Comején

These termite nests are all over the place in El Comején, Masaya. They are in the trees, on the ground and about everywhere you look. On the other hand, there is a small hill that looks just like a termite nest...thus [according to some] the name El Comején (termite in Spanish).

Estos nidos de comején se encuentran por todos lados en El Comején, Masaya. Están en los árboles, por la tierra y por donde mirás. Por otro lado, hay una colina pequeña que se parece a un nido de comején...por eso [según algunos] se le puso el nombre El Comején.

Pork ribs/costillas de cerdo

We had this delicious lunch a few days ago en El Valle de la Laguna...pork ribs grilled to perfection, carrots and chayote...with a Coca-Cola Light to wash it's greasy loveliness down!!!

Almorzamos rico hace un par de días en La Valle de la Laguna...costillas de cerdo asadas a perfección, zanahoria y chayote...con una Coca-Cola light para enjuagar la rica grasa!!!

Sea Bass/Róbalo

I was out in the countryside in La Reforma II near Masaya and had a great meal, consisting of breaded sea bass, fried plantains and cooked carrots with a mayonnaise and ketchup sauce. The fish was out of this world!!! The man who cooked lunch sells fish and used to work in a restaurant. Ummm ummm!!

Estuve en el campo, en La Reforma II, Masaya, y disfruté una comida tremenda: róbalo empanizado, tostones y zanahoria cocida con salsa de mayonesa con salsa tomate. Era riquísimo ese pescado!!! El cocinero vende pescado y antes trabajaba como cocinero. Ummm ummmm!!
