Iguana hunting/cazando iguanas

These young men captured these iguanas in Nicaragua. Generally speaking, they locate them in the trees and then one goes up after the iguana(s) and gets it (them) to jump to the ground. They are quickly captured (usually live) and tied up to be sold or perhaps end up as soup or supper.

Estos jóvenes capturaron estos garrobos (iguanas) en Nicaragua. En términos generales, los ubican en los árboles y luego uno de los chavalos va tras él y consigue que se tira hasta el suelo. Ya bajados, los agarran rápidamente (normalmente todavía vivos) y los amarran para luego venderlos o quizá hacer una sopa o la cena.

Free cellular minutes/minutos gratis para celulares

Pepsi has a pretty good promotion going on right now. Every bottle top has free messages or free airtime on Claro telephones. Fortunately, in some of the areas I have been trekking around in, the locals are still throwing these bottles away. I got a pretty good collection of free cellular minutes. Maybe I'll call you!!!!

Stingrays/rayas látigo

The fishermen in Corinto, Nicaragua often include stingrays in their daily catch. They are killed at sea and then brought to the beach where anxious filleters cut them up. Many times the flesh of these animals is cut, breaded, fried and served as "fish sticks" in the local restaurants. It has a smooth, very neutral, fishlike flavor.
Los pescadores de Corinto, Nicaragua suelen pescar las rayas látigo. Las matan en el mar y las traen a la playa para que los 'fileteros' las preparen. En muchas instancias, la carne se corta, se empaniza y se frie para ser servido como 'dedos de pescado' en los restaurantes. Tiene un sabor suave, neutral, como pescado.

Blue eyes/ojos azules

Check out this family from Chinandega, Nicaragua. They have the most beautiful blue eyes you will ever see. Ironically, the three of them are also deaf. The mother (Gloria) knows LSN (Nicaraguan Sign Language). The older son (Francisco) studies in a school for the deaf in Chinandega and the little guy (José) has learned baby signs from the other two.

Mirá a esta familia de Chinandega, Nicaragua. Tienen los ojos azules más bonitos que se han vista jamás. Ironicamente los tres son sordos. La mamá (Gloria) sabe LSN (Lenguaje de Señas Nicaraguense). El chavalo major (Francisco) estudia en una escuela especial para sordos allí en Chinandega y el pequeño (José) usa señas de chiquitos, habiendo aprendido de los otros dos.

Managua airport/aeropuerto de Managua

You will probably be pleasantly surprised upon arrival at the airport in Managua, Nicaragua. It has been overhauled in the past few years and is quite modern, complete with full services for travelers. There is free WiFi throughout the airport. There are some good duty free stores in the luggage pickup area. Also, there is an extensive duty free shopping section in the departure area. Both have got great deals on perfume and liquor. On your departure, there are good opportunities to get coffee and other last minute souvenirs (or gifts). If you want artisan knickknacks, the only place to get them is outside the ticketing and check-in area, before you go through immigration. After immigration (in the departure lounge area (all the way down by Gate 1) there is a Casa del Café restaurant (I recommend the mocha for your last swig of java before getting on the plane), the excellent duty free stores, coffee stores, clothing, a pharmacy etc. These pix are from the departure lounge.

Probablemente se sorprende al llegar al aeropuerto en Managua, Nicaragua. Ha sido renovado en los últimos años y es bastante moderno, completo con servicios necesarios para los viajeros. Hay Internet inalámbrico gratis en todo el aeropuerto. También hay muchas tiendas "Duty Free", tanto al llegar al país como al salir de Nicaragua. Tienen excelentes precios en perfumes y licores. Al salir de Nicaragua, hay buenas oportunidades para comprar café y otros recuerdos (o regalos). Si querés artesanía, hay que comprarla en la zona fuera de dónde se registran los pasajeros pero antes de pasar por migración. Es el único lugar. Después de migración, (en las salas de salida (por la Puerta 1)) hay un restaurante Casa del Café (recomiendo el mocha como último trago de café antes de abordar tu vuelo), hay varias tiendas "Duty Free" excelentes, tiendas de ropa, una farmacia, etc. Estas fotos se tomaron de la sala de salida.

We went to eat last night at Intermezzo del Bosque.  It's got the best view of Managua of any restaurant I have been to.  Also, it's delightfully fresh and cool because it's at the top of the small mountains that border Managua to the West.  The exact address is: from the Colegio Centro Ámerica, 5 km. to the south.  Best to go in your own vehicle.

I had a fillet tip with an onion, white cream and jalapeño sauce.  It was served with mashed potatoes and fresh sautéed veggies.  The dinner salad was romaine lettuce and other fresh vegetables with a raspberry vinaigrette dressing.  The bread was typical but served with a delicious garlic butter.  (C$260 - $13)

To drink, I had some of their homemade sangrita with tequila on the side.  (C$60 - $3 per shot)

The best option I saw at the table tonight was a coconut shrimp and breaded shrimp combo.  There were 7 good sized shrimp on the plate ($C330 - $16.50). 

Sorry I don't have pictures of the food...they didn't come out well in the candlelight dining atmosphere.

The first time I went here was November 20, 1999 with my girlfriend (now my wife).  We had a pre-wedding dinner their too.  I guess we will be heading up there for our anniversary too!  A great place!

Fuimos a comer anoche en Intermezzo del Bosque.  Tiene el mejor vistazo de Managua (hasta donde yo he encontrado).  También tiene un clima rico y fresco porque está encima de las colinas occidentales de Managua.  La dirección exacta es: del Colegio Centro Ámerica 5 km. al sur.   Es mejor ir en vehículo propio.

Comí punta jalapeña.  Viene acompañada con puré de papas y verduras cocidas.  Antes, sirven una ensalada de lechuga y verduras con un aderezo de frambuesa y vinagre.  El pan era corriente pero con una deliciosa mantequilla con ajo (C$260 -$13).

Para tomar, tequila con sangrita de casa (C$60 - $3 por trago).

La mejor opción, en mi opinión, es el plato de camarón al coco y empanizado.  Había 7 camarones grandes en el plato ($C330 - $16.50).

Lamento no incluir fotos de la comida…no salieron muy bien en la luz tenue del lugar.

La primera vez que vine a comer aquí fue 20 de Noviembre de 1999 con mi novia (ahora mi esposa).  También tuvimos una cena pre-boda allí.  Creo que vamos por nuestro aniversario también!  Es un lugar muy singular!

A couple of snakes/unas culebras

I have been finding a lot of snakes lately, unfortunately most of them dead already. I would love to get some nice pictures of these live because they are really beautiful.

Chinese food in Granada/Comida china en Granada

Welcome to the Yon Niy Ta Chinese restaurant in Granada.  'twasn't bad food but definitely not even in the same league as say...The Great Wall in Bloomington, Illinois.  That is some good Chinese food.  But, we are in Granada so, being objective, it's an ok alternative to the food fare in town.  It's cheap - the chop suey cost about $C80 ($4.00) and the shrimp cost $C120 ($6.00).

Bienvenidos al restaurante chino Yon Niy Ta en Granada.  La comida no está mal pero ni se compara a...digamos The Great Wall, en Bloomington, Illinois, EEUU.  Allí se sirve buena comida.  Pero, después de todo, estamos en Granada así que...es una opción decente.  Es barata - el chop suey cuesta  $C80 ($4.00) y los camarones cuestan $C120 ($6.00).

As the rainy season comes to an end, the gray skies come into effect. No problem for us because they signal cooler weather for the next 2 months. We like it!!!

Ahora que el invierno llega a su fin, los cielos gris dominan el panorama. No hay problema porque señalan un clima más fresco y agradable por los siguientes dos meses.  Nos gusta!!!
