Mariscos Las Pitahayas
Had some tasty seafood the other day at Mariscos Las Pitahayas in Altamira, Managua. It isn't much on ambiance...more like a ranchón you might find at a Nicaraguan beach like Poneloya o Paso Caballos. However, the service was really good and the food was tasty...not as hot as I would have liked but it was good.
We ordered breaded shrimp and garlic shrimp, both plates very tasty, served with french fries and salad. Prices weren't the greatest (click here to see) but it beats Burger King.
On a scale of 1 to 10, I give Mariscos Las Pitahayas a 6 (mainly for lack of ambiance and prices should be lower for this type of restaurant). If you have a hankering for seafood in the middle of Managua, it's a decent option.

Las Colinas del Sur
Las Colinas is a famous restaurant in Granada, Nicaragua. Their specialty is the whole guapote fish totally and almost miraculously de-spined. Oh and man is it good! The filet-o-fish (guapote too) are really good, especially the breaded ones with the garlic sauce on the side. It is not big on atmosphere but is so popular that many ex-presidents, Alejandro Fernández and Daniel Ortega have eaten there. Daniel usually drinks Coca Zero at room temperature. His wife, Rosario, drinks orange Fanta. The waiter told me so....
On a scale of 1 to 10, 8 for the fish which is excellent!

Shrimp
I had some delicious jumbo shrimp today, courtesy of Doña Vidaldina, surrounded by some of the old ruins in downtown Managua, just a bit west of the famous Oriental city market. She hails from Corinto, Nicaragua and knows her stuff. The breading on these shrimp and the fried potato wedges was out of this world! She also makes a mean ceviche, which, on other occasions, I have had the pleasure of eating.

Camarones<...>Shrimp
I enjoyed an incredible lunch this noon in El Riguero, Managua, Nicaragua. Look at those wonderful shrimp, breaded and then served with a garlic and butter sauce that was off the charts. Many might not know just how good the seafood in Nicaragua is and you don't have to go to a restaurant to get it - many locals are experts! These shrimp came from the Chinadenga/El Viejo area of Nicaragua, famous for its shrimp farms.

Brisas Marinas
You must try the seafood at the Brisas Marinas restaurant in San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua. It’s located right on the beach, a perfect place to watch the sun set over the San Juan bay. I savored two shrimp dishes: breaded shrimp with a nice mayonnaise based sauce on the side and shrimp in butter and garlic sauce. Both are served with salad, rice and potato. Each plate costs C$250 ($10.85). Wow! Out of this world! When you go, tell Pablo or Jaquelín that I said hi!

Las Isletas de Granada
| English: Picture showing a volcanic island in Cocibolca Lake, Granada, Nicaragua. (Photo credit: Wikipedia) |
We had a nice day on Lake Nicaragua (Colcibolca) visiting Las Isletas de Granada. It was a strangely overcast January day and even rained a couple of times. However, the hot fish lunch and great views made it well worth while.

We spent the day in El Menco, Rivas, right along Lake Nicaragua (Cocibolca). There are wonderful beaches and really nice people. We had a local lunch of guapote, tostones (fried plantains) and rice, washed down with orangeade. Click on the top picture to see a bigger version.

Pescamar
I spent three days in Matagalpa, my old stomping grounds for 3+ years from 2000-2004, and a fairly common spot for Nicaraguan tourists. I had in mind ordering one of my favorites for the cool, rainy climate: shrimp soup. However, once inside the friendly confines, I decided to stretch my budget and go for the above: shrimp in garlic sauce or breaded shrimp (you can have either plate for C$200 - $8.97), served with a dinner salad, rice, bread and fries (and tartar sauce for the breaded shrimp). Please! Get the breaded shrimp. They are one of the best seafood deals you will find. Ironically, Matagalpa (particularly Pescamar) has cheaper seafood than the Pacific coast port town of Corinto, 3 1/2 hours away (which is where they go and get it from!)
