Charly's Bar and Restaurante

 

I finally got to Charly's Bar and Restaurante in Granada, Nicaragua, after hearing so much about it.  I am not an expert on German food but I have eaten my share of it.  Charly's is the real thing...surprising, in fact, to find this gem of varied food in Granada.  There is a real variety of German food on the menu.  Dishes vary in price from soups for C$90 ($4) to sauerkraut pork chop and sausage plates for C$250 ($10.75). German beer (a dark version I drank for C$90 ($4) was particularly rich.  The surroundings are pleasing.  Great music in the background on some German based internet radio station playing all rock in English.  The service, by Charly himself, was great.  I will definitely be back.

On a scale of 1 to 10, Charly's get's a 9.

Después de escuchar tantos buenos informes, al fin pude ir a Charly's Bar y Restaurante en Granada, Nicaragua.  No soy experto en la cocina alemán empero la he probado bastante.  Charly's es de verdad...me sorprendió, de hecho, hallar esta gema de restaurante en Granada.  Hay una verdadera variedad de comida alemán ofrecido en el menú.  Precios de los platos varian entre C$90 ($4) para diferentes sopa hasta C$250 ($10.75) por platos fuertes como el sauerkraut con chuleta de cerdo y chorizo.  Una cerveza oscura alemana que costó C$90 ($4) fue particilarmente rica.  El ambiente es agradable...se escuchaba una emisora de radio alemana (por internet, seguro) que tocaba solamente música rock en inglés.  El servicio, por Charly mismo, era excelente.  Yo vuelvo, ¡¡¡claro que sí!!!

De 1 a 10, le doy un 9 a Charly's.

Black Forrest/Selva Negra

We zipped up to Selva Negra today, wanting to feel that chilly Matagalpan air and savor the citrus-like mountain grown coffee.

Actually, the smell of German sausage changed my mind as we entered the dining area.  Let me backtrack though: the entrance policy has changed.  All must pay onw of two admission prices: C$50 for just admission rights or C$100 that can be applied to the food or lodging bill.  The latter is the better deal, of course.

The updated menu has some pretty decent prices.  They do add gratuity and tax to these prices (a 25% addition to your bill, which as you may know is common in Nicaraguan restaurants).  There are many sandwiches for $3.00.  My sauerkraut and sausage meal cost $8.  The Pepsi was $0.50.  Finally, to top it off I had a piece of chocolate/orange cake with two cups of Selva Negra coffee.  The cake costs $3 and the coffee (a carafe with 2 cups) costs $0.50.  By the way, the sauerkraut is OFF THE CHARTS!!! Auf wiedersehen Selva Negra!!!

Nos escapamos hoy a Selva Negra, deseos de sentir ese aire puro y friíto de Matagalpa nuevamente...y saborear el café de montaña con su gustito cítrico.

Eventualmente el olor de salchichas alemanas me hizo cambiar de mente al entrar en el restaurante.  Pero antes de contarte aquello, dejame explicar la política de entrada ahora en Selva Negra.  Tenés que pagar una de dos opciones: C$50 ($2.50) para solo el derecho de entrada o C$100 ($5.00) que es consumible en comidas y hospedaje.  El último, por supuesto, representa la mejor oferta.

El menú está actualizado también con precios en dólares...y no son tan malos.  Ellos toman la libertad de agregar la propina y impuestos a los precios del menú (representa un aumento de 25% de los precios alistados - esta es una práctica muy común en los restaurantes de Nicaragua).  Hay muchas variedades de sandwich que cuestan $3.00.  Yo comí salchichas con sauerkraut por $8.00.  La Pepsi cuesta $0.50.  Para colmo, me lanzé una torta de chocolate/naranja con dos tazas de café Selva Negra.  La torta cuesta $3.00 y el café (un pitchelito con dos tazas) cuesta $0.50.  A propósito, el sauerkraut es TREMENDO!!!  Auf wiedersehen Selva Negra!!!
