Mi Viejo Ranchito

We went to Mi Viejo Ranchito, located at Km. 17.5, on the highway to Masaya from Managua, with Cesar and Elizabeth Gonzalez hailing from Puerto Rico. They have live music many nights of the week, as was the case on Sunday. They have an extensive menu of typical Nicaraguan food. I ordered the small assorted platter and it was really good! It costs C$125 (about $6.00) and had a really flavorful assortment of goodies. You'll have to click on it to enlarge it. On a scale of 1 top 10, this place is an 8. Definitely worth a visit...again!

Fuimos a Mi Viejo Ranchito, ubicado en el KM. 17.5 Carretera a Masaya con unos amigos nuestros de Puerto Rico, César y Elizabeth González. Hay música en vivo casi todas las noches y el domingo no fue la excepción. El menú consiste en una muy buena selección de comida Nica. Yo pedí el pequeño plato surtido y me agradó mucho! Costó C$125 (más o menos $6.00) y tenía una buena y sabrosa variedad de favoritos locales. Pinchá la foto para ver más detalles. De 1 a 10, este lugar recibe un 8. Definitivamente vale la pena visitar...de nuevo!!

Quesillos in León/Quesillos en León

I saw a sign urging me 'not to travel to get my quesillos' (string cheese smothered with onions in vinegar and covered with sweet cream and sprinkled with salt, carefully wrapped in a tortilla or served on a plate) but rather eat them there in León (near El Colegio La Salle). OK. I accepted. They were good. If you like La Paz Centro quesillos, you will be pleased. If you prefer Nagarote quesillos, like I do, you will give it a 6 on a scale of 1 to 10. If all else fails and you are not traveling to Managua, go ahead and give it a try. It will get you out of a 'I want quesillo' jam.

Vi un rótulo que me decía que no 'viajara para conseguir mis quesillos' (ya sabés que es un quesillo).  Mejor los conseguiera en León (cerca del Colegio La Salle).  Va pues.  Acepté.  Estaban buenos.  Si a vos te gustan los quesillos de La Paz Centro, te van a gustar.  Si preferís quesillos de Nagarote, como a mi me gustan, de 1 a 10 los darás un 6.  Bueno, para sacarte de apuros y si no tenés un viaje hacia Managua, andate a Quesillos Típicos de Mi tierra.  Quizá te satisfagan cuando sentís "YO QUIERO UN QUESILLO".

Crawdads in El Bejuco/Camerones del rio en El Bejuco

 











I had a commitment to fulfill in El Bejuco, Chinandega on a Sunday morning so I headed out from Chinandega and arrived. All having been said and done, to my surprise I was invited to have a 'seafood' platter for lunch. It consisted of three different types: crawdads, small river shrimp and fish. Rice, beans and tortillas were added as filler. The hostess explained that she had sent her son out to the river the day before and he spent two hours trying to get some decent sized crawdads. He did indeed! They were deeeee-liiiiiii-cious! And big too!

Tuve un compromiso en El Bejuco, Chinandga un domingo por la mañana así que salí de Chinandega y llegué. Habiendo cumplido mis deberes, y para sorpresa mía, me invitaron a saborear 'fruta del mar' para el almuerzo. Consistía de tres diferentes tipos de 'mariscos' o 'riíscos': camerón de rió, camarones chiquitos de río y pescado. Por supuesto arroz, frijoles y tortillas también venían en el paquete. La señora que me invitó explicó que, el día anterior, había mandado a su hijo al río para buscar. Pasó dos horas en un esfuerzo por encontrar los camerones de río más grande. Sí que tuvo éxito! Eran deeeeeeee-liiiiiiiii-ciosos! Y grandes también!

Corinto bridge/Puente de Corinto

Here it is! The new bridge leading to Corinto. For the moment, all traffic is directed over this bridge. However, when the bypass road through Paso Caballos is repaired, all heavy traffic will travel that path, leaving this free to car and pedestian traffic.

Aquí está!!! El nuevo puente que lleva a Corinto. Por el momento, todo el tráfico se dirige por este puente. Sin embargo, cuando el camino alterno que pasa por Paso Caballos está reparado, todo el tráfico pesado pasará por aquella ruta, dejando esta carretera libre para vehículos livios y transeuntes.

Verdi restaurant/Restaurant Verdi

Would you like to eat the best fried chicken in Masaya, Nicaragua? Welcome to Verdi (there are two in town). From the Petronic it's 75 mtrs south (from the Tip Top roundabout, head south about 1 1/2 blocks). Everybody says they have the best chicken in town. I decided on the steak with jalapeño sauce. The one in the picture cost C$83 (about $4.00). It was tender and flavorful! I would recommend this place...it's lined up as fast food but has some really good options on the menu. It's a winner! We went with our friends Wesley and Lesley, hailing from Alaska.

¿Te gustaría comer el mejor pollo rostizado de Masaya, Nicaragua? Bienvenido a Verdi (hay dos en Masaya). De la Petronic, son 75 metros al sur (de la rotonda Tip Top, 1 1/2 c. al sur). Todo el mundo dice que tienen el mejor pollo rostizado en la ciudad. Yo opté por el churrasco a la jalapeño. El que se mira allí costó C$83 ($4.00). La carne era suave y tenía buen sabor. Yo recomiendo este lugar...está establecido como comida rápida pero tiene unas muy buenas opciones. Es un ganador!!! Fuimos con nuestros amigos Wesley y Lesley de Alaska, EEUU.

Stuffed pepper/Chile relleno

Our good friends Alejandra and Esmirna (from Tijuana, Mexico) cooked us up some stuffed peppers the other day. They were...ummm ummm delicious. It's hard to come up with some ingredientes here like chiles poblanos, cilantro, chipotle, etc. but they sure did a good job! Ándale!

Nuestras buenas amigas Alejandra y Esmirna (de Tijuana, México) cocinaron unos ricos chiles rellenos el otro día. Eran...mmmm, mmmm ricos! Cuesta hallar algunos ingredientes para la cocina mexicana...i.e. chiles poblanos, cilantro, chipotle, etc. pero hicieron un intento estupendo! Ándale!

Vicente Padilla's house/Casa de Vicente Padilla

This first house is Vicente Padilla's house in Chinandega, Nicaragua before he signed the $33 million contract with Texas. The two pix below show the fruit of his labors after signing - a new construction on the highway between Chinandega and Chichigalpa. Recently he signed with the Dodgers again for between $4 million and $5 million, according to varied sources. Let's hope he saved some of those $33 million. Might not see money like that again.

Aquí está la casa de Vicente Padilla in Chinandega, Nicaragua, antes de firmar su megacontrato de $33 millón con Texas. Las otras dos fotos muestran el fruto de su labor después de haber firmado - una nueva construccion en la carretera Chianandega - Chichigalpa. Recientemente, según diferentes fuentes, firmó con los Dodgers por un año y entre $4 y $5 millones de dólares. Ojalá que haya ahorrado algo de los primeros $33 millones. Quizá no vuelva a tocar semejante cantidad.

Coach House coffee/Café de Coach House

I think that's what the place is called - Coach House Coffee. It's right in that little plaza by PriceSmart. I ordered a mocha extra strong and got this! I was pleasantly surprised, although it is a little pricey at $3.40. Apparently it's the same company that has the little coffee shop inside PriceSmart too.

Creo que el lugar se llama así - Coach House Coffee. Está allí por el parqueo de PriceSmart. Pedí un café mocha extra fuerta y me dieron esto! Una buena sorpresa aunque un poco caro a $3.40. Aparentemente es la misma compañías que tiene un café a dentro de PriceSmart.

Don Simón

In the wake of sad and unfortunate events and the ensuing temporary closing of Kathy's Waffle House, in Granada, Nicaragua, we were forced to look for a different breakfast spot in town.  The Heilig family was in town so we moseyed over to the Hotel Plaza Colón.  Hotel Plaza Colon is located right in front of Parque Colón, known as Parque Central in the historical city of Granada. The coffee was good!  Breakfast was 6 on a scale of 1 to 10.  I had the Don Simón Ranchero breakfast, as seen below for C$70 ($3.40).  I really miss Kathy's Waffle House....

En vista del triste y desafortunado suceso y el cierre temporal de Kathy's Waffle House, en Granada, Nicaragua, nos vimos obligados a buscar otro lugar donde desayunar.  La familia Heilig estaba de visita así que dimos un paseo hasta llegar al Parque Colón (Parque Central), donde se ubica el Hotel Plaza Colón, en el corazón de la ciudad histórica de Granada.  El café estuvo bastante bueno.  Pedí el Desayuno Ranchero Don Simón, como se mira en la foto.  De 1 a 10, doy un 6.  Cuesta C$70 ($3.40).  Ay cómo extraño a Kathy's Waffle House.
